African costumes
On Friday the 15th of April the South African community got together to put their artistic, creative feet forward to create African costumes.
The first step involved a little research. Looking at many photos of the different types of outfits found in South Africa. We discovered there were many types and characteristics including traditional warrior get up, everyday wear, the use of bright colours and many patterns.
In keeping this project fair, each community group of about 4 children were given the same supplies to create their African outfit. The supplies consisted of newspaper, coloured paper, cellotape, jovi's and scissors. A set amount of time was given for planning and design, then 30 minutes to create the costume.
The groups set to work immediately, it was fantastic seeing the students working together so cooperatively to achieve a shared goal. I noticed older students taking a leadership role and helping the younger students, and all students contributing their valued thoughts and ideas to their group.
As you can see from the photos, the end results were outstanding with such a range in the final costumes.
Well done South Africa Community!
Swimming
Every day for two weeks Room 5 goes swimming at the modern Northern Arena. First we have to get changed in the girl’s and boy’s toilets. Then we get on the bus and say hello to the bus driver. Next we line up and go in and put our caps and goggles on. Later we get in the pool and do swimming. After, we go and get our bags from under the hard wooden benches. Later we go into the change rooms. The change rooms are very echoey. Lastly we go back to school on the leaky bus. – Aysha
Swimming
Room 5 went swimming for two weeks at the Northern Arena. First we got dressed into our togs and got into the leaky bus. Then we got our caps and goggles on. Soon we got into our groups. Then we met our teachers. Next we got into the pool and got some noodles and did arm circles with them. Afterwards we got changed and dried our hair. Lastly we got back in the bus. I felt very happy that I went swimming. - Ben

My School, Your School
Room 5 has read a big book called "My School, Your School". This book looked at a school in India. We also looked at Mrs Smith's book on children in Zambia in Africa. We compared the schools and especially looked at the classrooms. We sorted the information using a matrix and a Venn diagram.
We found out that even though we have more equipment and furniture in our classroom, the children in other schools still want to learn, to have fun and are part of a community. You see we are the same but different!

Firewise Posters
Room 5 has been learning how to be Firewise. To get the information, we watched the Firewise DVD, we looked at pictures and we talked to each other, trying to recall what we should do in a fire and then we asked the Silverdale firefighters questions.
We sorted all the most important information by ordering what we had learnt into step by step instructions.
We used all this information to make posters to teach our families what to do if there is a fire in our house. Have a look ...
